These sexy, blood splattered films were my "Gone with the Wind" and John Ashley was my James Dean. Should she cover my eyes? Then my uncle said to her "Well, the kids gotta learn sometime!"

They thought a grisly horror movie was OK for us to see, but when the first nude scene came on I could see my aunt shrinking in her seat. My cousin and I were in the back seat of the car with my aunt and uncle in the front. I remember seeing "Mad Doctor of Blood Island" at the drive-in sometime in the early 70s and I never forgot it. These films were audacious and launched an entire genre of B films that had everything a boy would want to see in copious amounts. And the films are just as I remember them. The extra features answer many questions I asked myself several decades ago. The print quality is phenomenal - much better than they ever looked on a stained grindhouse or drive-in screen.

The sub-titles are hilariously inaccurate. The special effects are inescapably cheap.

This is a heavily anticipated box set and well worth the wait. There is only so much praise one can bestow upon a film, but on these films too much is not enough. These are simply the greatest films ever made. My final rating is a solid 3.5 and comes recommended. Overall it's a very good set with very entertaining films with robust viuals aand special features despite being a bit lazy. Overall the special features were great, but felt lazy, unoriginal, and slapped on for this release. As stated above, the set also includes a soundtrack for the third chronological film which is very well restored. I don't have a problem with that documentary as most of the people interviewed are directly connected to the films, or have near encyclopedic knowledge of them, however it would've been nice if more original content was produced for this release, rather than taking it all from one documentary. Unfortunately a vast majority of the interviews come from the same documentary, Mark Hartley's "Machete Maidens Unleashed". Every film also includes interviews with various people knowledgeable at hand. 4 starsĮvery film barring "Terror is a Man" has an audio commentary or two attached to it. I personally don't have a problem with this as I believe it keeps the experience of these types of drive-in movies alive, as well as having a clear enough view of every detail of every scene. The video quality is great, while still keeping some dirt and scratches from the film reals. Overall most of the time it is above average to good, but never reaches greatness. The soundtrack is restored very well done as well with just a little bit of fuzziness popping in every now and again. The worst offender is on the "Terror is a Man" blu-ray in which shortly before the scene where the bell rings and the creature is cut into, there is a noticeable dip in audio quality and a constant humming sound is heard. Voices and sound effects are clear, but there are still cracks and pops appearing on audio tracks. The film's audio is restored as best as I personally think it possibly can be. Overall despite some hiccups I got exactly what I payed for in regards to what's included on the set. (However it should be noted that it was easily fixable with a tiny bit of glue and I've not had a problem since.) The package comes with 4 blu-rays and one soundtrack CD for the third chronological film in the series, "Mad Doctor of Blood Island". I assume this to be the result of haphazard packaging or shipment either by the sellers or the person delivering it. I peered inside the box and noticed that the tab that would keep it closed was broke. Apparently this was enough to make the opposite side pop open. When I received the boxset, while I was inspecting the 4 individual blu-rays, I set my small extremely lightweight (I can't emphasize enough how truly small and lightweight it is) pocket knife that I use to open packages on the slipcase. I didn't have any problems with the sellers themselves(Great-Buys!), and I highly recommend you buy from them That being said, the slipcase housing the 4 movies is barely kept together. So please, do a little research before you buy, and make sure it's what you truly want. I believe that when you buy niche collectors sets like these, you absolutely need to know what you're getting, because it's not fair to penalize a great blu-ray restoration just because you didn't enjoy the movie within. Note: When I do blu-ray reviews my score never reflects the actual content of the movie itself (other than how the restoration effects the quality of the film).
